Some things to consider:
Make this a fun event! If you have small children, plan the portrait session around nap and meal times. Make it a full family event and plan a picnic or ice cream treat afterward.
One thing that Sarah finds very helpful in keeping your eye on the subjects faces is to keep busy clothing to a minimum. Try to dress in a color theme or similarly (without looking like you’re clones of each other). For instance, everyone wears jeans OR khakis and colored shirts in blues and greens. Prints, patterns and writing tend to distract from faces. Remember that you WANT to be seen in these pictures!
Trying out a new hairstyle for the first time at your portrait session is not always the best idea. Try to avoid this! You will be happy you did. Any trims, cuts and dyes should be done at least a week in advance, if necessary. You don’t want your stylist to color your hair and have some mishap … and have you show up for your session with the wrong shade of ORANGE… or, then again, maybe you do.
